The African American and African Diaspora Studies Graduate Society
Presents
The Ninth Annual Herman C. Hudson Symposium
At
Indiana University, Bloomington
"Black Diasporas Reimagining Race, Space and Community"
March 30 – 31, 2012
Keynote Speakers
Dr. Jacqueline Nassy Brown, CUNY
&
Dr. Krista Thompson, Northwestern
This conference seeks to examine the relationship between "Geography" and
"Race" in historical and contemporary diasporic space. The interplay of
space, place and “blackness” is complex and contradictory and offers an
opportunity to explore the lived and imagined experiences of diasporic and
migrant communities. Although the conference privileges "Black"
Diasporas, we welcome abstracts that can offer comparative perspectives. The
conference draws attention to the constructed natures of categories,
"Black" and "Geography,” emphasizing the complex ways in which they inform
each other, shaping the formation of individual and communal identities.
We encourage papers and artwork that deal with (but are not limited to)
the following topics:
Writing the Body as Geographies of Race
The Body as a Geographic Object
The Mind as a Geographic Space
Displacement/Dislocation & Race
Memory & Space
Futuristic Geographies of Race
Queer Geographies/Diasporas
Environmental/Social Justice
Sound, Space & Race
Sexualized Space(s)
Space & Religion
Eroticism & Space
We welcome submissions from graduate and undergraduate students, scholars,
creative artists and community and cultural workers. Interested
panelists should submit a 150-word abstract and a 50-75-word bio. Presenters
who are interested in displaying visual art should submit a digital CD in
jpeg. format of their work along with a 150-word project statement that
speaks to the conference theme. Those interested in exhibiting their
topic via poster board should follow the guidelines for submitting a paper
and visual art abstract.
We welcome panel proposals that should include a description of the theme,
a 150-word abstract from each paper, the name of the panel chair, and a
