The National Endowment for the Humanities supports tuition-free professional development programs each summer for American school teachers. Participants receive stipends to help cover travel and living expenses.

NEH SUMMER SEMINARS AND INSTITUTES
NEH Summer Seminars and Institutes last two to five weeks. Among the subjects offered for school teachers in 2012 are:
• Abolitionism
• Cultural diversity in Berlin
• Canterbury Tales
• Native American novels, history, cultures
• Fairy tales and fantasy
• Industrial revolution
• Hannah Arendt
• Punishment, politics, and culture
• African-American political, social history
• American frontiers
• Central Asia in world history
• Chinese film and society
• Cotton culture
• Shakespeare
• Bach
• American immigration and culinary culture
• American religious diversity
• South African history and culture
Most programs take place on American campuses; others are held in England, Germany, and South Africa.

NEH LANDMARKS OF AMERICAN HISTORY AND CULTURE WORKSHOPS
NEH Landmarks of American History and Culture Workshops last one week and take place at sites of historical or cultural significance across the nation.
Among the subjects to be studied are:

• The American skyscraper
• Santa Fe history and culture
• African-American entrepreneurs
• Missouri-Kansas border Wars
• American revolution
• New York, 1877-2001
• West Coast history
• Huckleberry Finn
• Industrial revolution
• Mississippi history and culture
• Civil Rights movement
• African-American history in Chicago
• Spanish, Mexican, and American California
• War of 1812
