Big event planed for those interested in history, architecture, art or religion.

Lakewood, NJ, November 20, 2010: The Lakewood Historical Society in cooperation with the Lakewood Heritage Commission will sponsor The Lakewood Houses of Worship Experience on Sunday, November 20, 2011, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. This is a free event. Participating houses of worship will open their doors and welcome the public with a variety of experiences. The Lakewood Municipal Building will be the starting point where the public can pick up a free program listing participating congregations and a map of their locations beginning at 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 20. Visitors can then chose which locations and events they would like to visit.
Sister Helen Neder of the Lakewood Heritage Commission said, “This will be a truly lovely afternoon where the public can see some of the oldest, most beautiful and unique buildings in Ocean County.” How unique? All Saints Episcopal Church will highlight priceless stained glass windows created by Tiffany and Co. in the nineteenth century and First Presbyterian Church will showcase their sanctuary filled with nineteenth century hand crafted wood work not seen in modern construction. Georgian Court University will open the original Saint Mary’s Church, recently restored with great care, and share the story of how the building was relocated by horse team down the winding narrow course of North Lake Drive. Many other interesting programs will be offered including an organ recital at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church.
According to the director of the Lakewood Heritage Museum, Stacey Spina, “houses of worship are often wonderful examples of fine preservation because communities value the traditions associated with the building and wish to maintain it for future generations. Whether they are ornate and lavish or simple and modest they are treasure troves of history and art.”
