Rethinking Honour and Community in the Antebellum South: A symposium hosted by BrANCH, University of Northumbria, 11-14 October 2012
2012 marks the 30th anniversary of the publication of Bertram Wyatt-Brown’s Southern Honor: Ethics and Behaviour in the Old South, and the 40th anniversary of John Blassingame’s The Slave Community, seminal texts for understanding notions of community, identity, and manhood in the antebellum South. Responding to this important anniversary, BrANCH has kindly allowed the symposium organisers, Dr Lydia Plath and Dr Ben Schiller, the opportunity to include a series of panels, roundtables and
plenaries in the 2012 annual conference programme. By inviting some of today’s leading scholars, including
Professor Edward E. Baptist of Cornell University, to consider the continuing validity and relevance of honour and community, the symposium will both celebrate and interrogate the field-making contributions Wyatt-Brown and Blassingame made to Southern history. Is “honour” still a useful framework
within which to consider notions of white Southern manhood and identity? Can we really talk of a slave “community” given the diversity of enslaved experience across the South?
How does the growing historiography on the lives of women, children, free blacks and non-slaveholding whites complicate these paradigms? Rethinking Honour & Community in the Antebellum South will be a unique opportunity to discuss the ways in which notions of community, honour, and identity functioned across racial, class, gender, and regional boundaries in the nineteenth century South and we invite
paper and panel proposals addressing these and related questions.Proposals should be e-mailed to Dr Ben
Schiller, Senior Lecturer in Anglo-American History, Teesside University,B.Schiller@tees.ac.uk. The deadline for
submissions is 30th March 2012.
