Call for Submissions
Activities for Teaching about Gender and Sexuality in the University Classroom
Co-editors Elizabeth Ribarsky (Communication) and Michael Murphy (Women and Gender Studies), both at the University of Illinois Springfield, invite submissions for an innovative new volume of active-learning exercises and activities for teaching about gender and sexuality to undergraduate students. We seek practical, hands-on activities written by those who have successfully developed strategies for teaching these topics in various disciplines. Activities should be road tested, well justified, and grounded in relevant pedagogical and discipline-specific theory and research.
Submissions MUST address these topics with clear internal headings:
1. Title
2. Courses or course level (for which the activity would be appropriate)
3. Objective of activity (1-3 objectives)
4. Estimated time required for facilitating activity
5. Required materials
6. Rationale (why exercise is needed)
7. Preparing for the activity
8. Facilitating the activity
9. Debriefing/discussion questions
10. Typical/expected results
11. Limitations and cautionary advice
12. Extensions/alternative uses (if applicable)
13. References (required; max. 10 sources)
14. Additional readings (if relevant)
15. Classroom handouts (if relevant and formatted for duplication by reader)
Complete activities (NOT proposals) must:
be original, innovative, and previously unpublished
use APA 6th edition citation style
be no longer than 10 pages, typed, double-spaced, formatted for 8½ x 11 paper
be submitted electronically using Microsoft Word format (.doc or .docx)
include a brief biographical statement (75 words max.) and full contact information with institutional affiliation (if relevant)
include a summary (40 words max.) of the activity suitable for the table of contents
