Using a combination of newly-available archival material and recollections from former government officials, The Iran-Iraq War: The View from Baghdad seeks to re-examine the bloody eight-year conflict from a wide variety of informed perspectives. This event is co-sponsored by the Wilson Center’s History and Public Policy Program and Middle East Program, along with the Conflict Records Research Center at the National Defense University.

The centerpiece of this event will be newly available evidence from Saddam Hussein’s regime stored digitally at the Conflict Records Research Center and available to academic researchers at the National Defense University. These new materials, including high-level Iraqi government documents and recorded conversations between Saddam Hussein and his top deputies, provide a new and unique perspective on the war.
Participating in this panel discussion are Prince Turki al-Faisal, former ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the United States and former director general of Saudi Arabia’s General Intelligence Directorate, Mansour Farhang, former Iranian ambassador to the United Nations, and David Newton, former United States Ambassador to Iraq.
Hans Binnendijk, director of the National Defense University’s Institute for National Strategic Studies, will chair the event. Michael Van Dusen, the Wilson Center’s executive vice president and COO, will offer introductory remarks.
