Historians of landscape, rural life and economy and others are invited to submit papers for a conference exploring the long and a complex relationship people have had with the landscape around them: exploiting it for food and mineral wealth, shaping it to their own ends, seeking solace and recreation in its beauties, and defending the latter when seen to be under threat. This conference seeks to set current concerns in historic context.
