This seminar will focus on the two most prominent and frequently discussed aspect of J. M. Coetzee’s novels, their moral seriousness and their literary form. It will consider Waiting for the Barbarians, The Life and Times of Michael K, Foe, Age of Iron, Disgrace, Elizabeth Costello, and Summertime to determine what relation, if any, obtains between the two. Is the form of the novels an extension of high modernism or an example of postmodern experimentation? In addition to these topics, the seminar will probe the relation between philosophical critiques of political orders and the place of politics, especially oppositional politics, in “political novels.”
