The Ekaterinburg Academy of Contemporary Art (Ekaterinburg, Russia)announces its online conference
(In)visible cities: visual practices of modern megalopolises
The city in its multiple dimensions has long attracted artists, writers, filmmakers, architects and scholars, as an object of observation and inquiry. Strategies of urban development, politics of diverse social agents and histories of urban communities and individuals leave traces, both visible and invisible, on urban landscapes. Citizens of modern post-industrial cities often question the quality of urban environment, demanding that urban centers provide them with environmentally safe and aesthetically appealing milieu. Modern megalopolis is rife with communications, rivaling emotions and contesting artistic reflections.
The online conference (In)visible cities: visual practices of modern megalopolises seeks to analyze the city in the context of visual communication and to reflect on theoretical and practical experiences of studying urban spaces through visual and other methods.
The participants are expected to discuss a variety of topics including but not limited to:
city images and locales, individual and collective memory maps, visual representations of the city’s past, present and the future, visible and invisible aspects of the city’s everyday life, media representations of urban cultural practices and communities.
We invite submissions from architects, urban planners, designers, artists, as well as from scholars of different academic backgrounds, such as visual studies, cultural studies, economics, marketing, and political studies. The following thematic blocks will structure the conference’s discussion:
• The city’s past: historical images as resources for the development of urban spaces

• The city’s future: contours of the city’s strategic development
