The CIA’s Historical Collections Division and the Center for the Study of
Intelligence, in partnership with the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library,
will present a symposium on President Reagan and his use of intelligence in
the formulation of U.S.-Soviet policy. The symposium will be held at the
Reagan Library on Nov. 2, 2011. Former policymakers, intelligence
practitioners, intelligence analysts, and historians will discuss how the
Reagan Administration used intelligence in making policies to end the Cold
War.
As part of this event, the CIA is releasing a collection of 200 declassified
documents, including intelligence assessments, research papers, National
Intelligence Estimates, high-level memos, and briefing materials provided to
the Administration during this period. The collection also includes several
video briefings prepared by the CIA’s Directorate of Intelligence and
delivered to policymakers on such varied topics as the Soviet space program,
the Andropov succession, the Chernobyl disaster, and the Moscow summit.
This was the first time the Agency used videos on a regular basis to deliver
intelligence to the policymaker.
Symposium speakers will include Oleg Kalugin, Former Major General in the
Soviet KGB, and Kenneth Adelman, Former Director, U.S. Arms Control and
Disarmament Agency. Panelists include Peter Clement, CIA Deputy Director for Intelligence for Analytic Programs; Douglas MacEachin, former CIA Deputy Director of Intelligence; Admiral Bobby Inman, former CIA Deputy Director; Martin Anderson, former Advisor to President Reagan; Gregory Treverton, Director, RAND Center for Global Risk and Security; David Holloway, Stanford University; Mary Sarotte, University of Southern California; Bruce D. Berkowitz, Author; Dr. Nicholas Dujmovic, CIA Historian; and David Lodge, CIA Analyst.
The documents in the HCD collection are packaged together in a booklet and
fully text-searchable DVD designed to help scholars and students assess the
impact intelligence had on the policy process during a critical period in
American history. The collection is available free to attendees, and will be
available online beginning Nov. 2 at:
