Call for Papers
New Voices, a Graduate English Conference
Bodies of Influence: The Human Body in the Humanities and Sciences
Georgia State University, Atlanta, GA
January 12-14, 2012
Keynote Speaker: Marilynn Richtarik, Associate Professor of 20th‐Century British and Irish
Literature and author of a critical biography of playwright Stewart Parker, forthcoming from Oxford University Press.
The human body in all of its glory and gore has fascinated scientists and artists since the cave
paintings of the Neanderthals. This year’s New Voices Conference will explore every facet of the
body, focusing on its representation in literature, rhetoric, visual art, theater, dance, film, oratory,
journalism, history, science, sociology, and anthropology, among other fields. This year’s theme
traverses a number of disciplines, so scholars in fields outside English Studies are encouraged to
submit proposals. We especially welcome work by graduate students in every area of English
Studies: literature, creative writing, linguistics, pedagogy, and rhetoric and composition.
We hope to engage thought that spans not only fields but other topoi/spaces: rhetorical, cultural,
theoretical, and geographical. Intersections of corporeality and spirituality, psychology and
physiology, and nature and nurture form possible areas of thought and theory. When we see
connections and commonalities, we understand that even though each of us is trapped in our own
skin, we are bound by our common humanity, a humanity represented corporeally.
Areas for exploration might include, but are not limited to the following:
*The Natural Body;
*The Body Politic;
*The Body of a Writer’s Work;
*The Body as Object; and
*The Transgressive Body.
