The 10th Biennial Middle Tennessee State University International Holocaust Studies Conference will convene in Murfreesboro, TN October 19-22, 2011 This year’s conference theme, “Global Perspectives on the Holocaust” reflects the origins of the participants, with almost two dozen international presenters traveling to MTSU from approximately fifteen different countries representing five of the six inhabited continents. For the first time, one day of the four day conference is devoted to genocide studies.
This year we have invited four impressive plenary speakers. Historian Paul Bartrop will speak on the connection between the Holocaust and genocide; Philosopher Laurence Thomas will discuss American Slavery and the Holocaust; internationally acclaimed historian Gerhard L. Weinberg will comment on the conference theme and propose “A World Wide Holocaust Project” and author Alexandra Zapruder will talk about and read from her book, Salvaged Pages: Young Writers’ Diaries of the Holocaust, Zapruder’s book was made into a major documentary film in 2005 starring Kate Hudson, Zach Braff, Ryan Gosling, Amber Tamblyn and Elijah Wood. The film will be screened at the conference. Undoubtedly, the most poignant conference session will be moving presentations by five Holocaust survivors. The final day of the conference is designed primarily for K-12 teachers who receive Continuing Education Credit and a bag of classroom materials for attending. Except for meals, K-12 day is free for area teachers.
