The Journal of Pan African Studies is organizing a special issue to analyze Manning Marable's controversial biography of Malcolm X (MX), A Life of Reinvention: Malcolm X (2011), scheduled for September 2012. Though not limited to the following, papers examining the biography may engage these themes:
• The unity and divergence of truth
• Research methods of biography reporting
• Gender dynamics
• Sexuality
• The complexity and burden of the biographer
• The revolutionary vision/psychology of MX
• The myth and reality of personal reinvention
• The Nation of Islam: sect or religious movement
• The surveillance of MX
• Contrasting the Autobiography of MX
• MX as an internationalist
• The definitive biography
• Explaining praise and criticism
• The second assassination of MX: story and image
The selection criteria will involve: relevance to theme, clarity of paper, intellectual significance, and originality. Participants must send a 50-word abstract by July 1, 2012 and their final paper by August 1, 2012 (the paper and abstract must include participant name, affiliation, paper title, and e-mail address). All contributions must be original, unless approved by the editor and submitted in MS word format via e-mail to jpanafrican@yahoo.com. The entire work should not exceed 25 double-spaced pages with a concise title and standard scholarly citations (see past issues for format organization). In regards to style (APA, Chicago, MLA, etc.), use what is standard in your area of study.
