Panel on the Evolution of Sovereignty in the Islamic World (Tokyo)

The Organization for Islamic Area Studies, Waseda University, Tokyo, is hosting an international conference on ‘Islam and Multiculturalism’ on 26-27 November 2011. As part of the conference, there will be a panel session on the ‘Evolution of Sovereignty in the Islamic World’. The idea of the panel is to explore how the European norm of sovereignty was received in the Islamic world in the modern era and how it has been negotiated with the various local contexts.
We seek panellists from various disciplines including, but not limited to, anthropology, history, philosophy, Islamic studies, law, International Relations and political science.
The conference will be held at Waseda University, Tokyo, and the travel cost and accommodation expenses will be covered.
