The Autry National Center seeks presenters on topics related to the anthropology, ethnography, and archeology of the American Southwest (broadly defined) for the first annual Southwest Docent Council Lecture on Sunday, February 19, 2012. Founded in 1914 by renowned journalist, adventurer, and activist Charles Lummis, the Southwest Museum has pursued an active and robust interpretive and collecting agenda for over eighty years. The recent merger between the Southwest and the Autry has spurred interest among the remaining SW docent corps in the creation of annual lecture to perpetuate and stimulate interest in the study of the cultures and histories, of the American Southwest. The lecture committee is particularly interested in fostering the work of graduate students and recent Ph.D. recipients. The Autry will provide an honorarium of $300 for the presentation.
The lecture will take place at the Autry National Center, 4700 Western Heritage Way, Los Angeles, CA 90027. We cannot provide funding for travel, although we may be able to house an out of town speaker. Scholars from outside the Los Angeles area should inquire into travel funding from their institutions.
Interested parties should submit a cover letter, CV, and 300-500 word abstract to submissions@theautry.org by November 1st, 2011. Applicants may be contacted by members of the selection committee to discuss their work, and the Autry will announce their selection on December 1, 2012.
