Grieving a Natural Response to Loss
The NALAG (Vic) 2011 conference will be held at the Hotel Grand Chancellor, Melbourne on Thursday October 6th. The 1 day conference will explore the ways in which issues that arise following losses other than bereavement can be addressed within a loss and grief framework (griefwork). The conference topics will address issues of grief across the lifespan such as addictions, aged care, domestic violence, adoption and issues of grief for migrants.
Presentations include ‘Adoption – from glow to woe’ Gary Coles (former Manager Vanish – Victorian Adoption Network and author of several books on adoption), ‘Addictions and Loss: A clinical approach’ Ros Winkler (Windana Drug and Alcohol Recovery), ‘Exploring Hope Within the Practice of Loss and Grief’ Tim Adam (Maryborough District Health Service), Moving Into Residential Aged Care – Experiences of transition care program clients, Jill Edwards (St Vincents Health). Other presentations will include a clinician’s perspective on supporting clients navigating the loss and grief associated with major life change and personal stories of grief journeys by those who experienced them.
This conference will be of interest to counsellors, social workers, teachers, nurses, health/mental health workers, welfare workers, pastoral carers, students and anyone interested in loss and grief. The conference is open to the general public.

Loss, Grief & Trauma: Enriching our understanding
This workshop will explore developments in loss and grief theory, and their relevance to practice. The presentation will consider how thinking has changed in areas such as the grieving process, goals for working with grief, complicated grief, and connections between grief and trauma.”
'Loss, Grief & Trauma: Enriching our understanding' is a 1 day workshop for counselling professionals and students which will be held on Wednesday October 5th at the Hotel Grand Chancellor, Melbourne.
Presenters
The workshop will be given by the academic staff of the Graduate Certificate in Loss, Grief and Trauma Counselling, School of Social and Policy Studies, Social Work and Social Planning, Flinders University South Australia. Associate Professor Carol Irizarry and Michael Bull will present the morning session on current concepts in loss and grief theory and practice and the afternoon session will be a skills based workshop given by David Roach and Annie Jarvis.
