I am seeking participants to join me in a panel for the SHA on the role of New Orleans during the Civil War, including the anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans in April 1862. My own paper explores the contributions of native northerners in New Orleans with an emphasis on the northern-born commanders of the Confederate forces in the city. Other possible topics for this panel could include the social life of New Orleans, New Orleans in the secession crisis, anything pertaining to the Union navy's capture of the city, General Benjamin Butler's occupation of the city, etc. If interested, or to contact me with any questions, email me at zimring@vt.edu or call (510) 207-0026.
