We are seeking proposals for an edited volume on sports documentaries. Scholars from the fields of cinema and media studies, communication studies, sports history and culture, and others are invited to contribute. This volume intends to cover a wide range of topics and sports, ranging in history from the boxing newsreels of the early silent era to "Hoop Dreams" and "King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters." Documentaries on “mainstream” sports such as baseball, football, basketball, and soccer will be included, but also those on nontraditional sports, such as surfing, video games, and professional wrestling. The role and function of sports documentaries in the media landscape and the world of sports competition will be explored, but further potential subjects include the following: gender/masculinity, race, nationality, auteurism, Marxism/consumerism, popular culture, aesthetics, convergence media, sports reality series, and sports on the margins. Of course, these are only a sample of the approaches that can be applied. 250-word abstracts will be due October 15, 2011 for consideration. Contributions should range between 4,000 to 7,000 words.
