Presentation:
Environmental disasters have a wide range of nterpretational and conceptual dimensions. Such events are present in both scientific and non-scientific records, under historical dates and contingencies, which construct narratives and experiences - in abundance, albeit disperse. Although we know the scientific measurement instruments for such events are rather recent - being not earlier than the first half of the twentieth century - it is most important to consider disasters in a past-to-present relation. Such inherent plurality of disasters brings forth the necessity of considering their historical dimension when relating human beings and the natural world. In this sense, this symposium is designed to propose historical readings regarding not only the objective dimension of environmental disasters, but also the subjective role within disasters, departing from the interdisciplinarity which is inherent to Environmental History.
