On Saturday October 29, 2011, Lord Fairfax Community College's Center for Civil War History will host a one day seminar and tour which will examine the plight of civilians in the lower Shenandoah Valley's border region during the Civil War. The day will begin with a classroom lecture by Prof. J.A. Noyalas--"The Final and Fatal Catastrophe": The Lower Shenandoah Valley on the Eve of the Civil War. The afternoon will consist of a four hour tour of sites between Stephens City through south of Middletown (the border region) which best illustrate the hardships confronted by civilians in the area and their interaction with troops of both armies.
The $20 fee covers the cost of handouts, morning lecture, and afternoon tour. Lunch is on your own and participants are advised that due to the nature of roadways the tour will be a carpool tour of sites. Detailed driving directions will be provided during check-in.
