HSS Roundtable Workshop on Gender and Science, Technology, Medicine, & the Environment

The Women’s Caucus of the History of Science Society is sponsoring a roundtable workshop and planning meeting from 1-5pm, Thursday, November 3, 2011, at the Annual History of Science Society Meeting in Cleveland, Ohio.

This special session will consist of two parts. The first half will be a roundtable in which several people will make presentations illustrating how they include women, gender, and sexuality in their courses, leaving us a good amount of time for discussion about challenges, teaching ideas they have found particularly effective, etc. The second half of the session will use issues and ideas raised in the first half as a springboard for discussing the future of women, gender, and sexuality studies within the history and social studies of science, technology, medicine, and the environment. Within this context we will consider the future of the HSS Women’s Caucus, generate specific goals to which the Caucus should aspire, and begin to develop a plan for how these goals can be reached. We are keen to involve scholars from a variety of institutional types and methodological backgrounds.

If you are interested in presenting a talk about a course that you have taught that engages with questions of women, gender, and sexuality in the STEM disciplines, or a talk discussing how your teaching of these topics has evolved, please send a copy of your syllabus and a brief abstract to both Erika Milam (milam@umd.edu) and Karen Rader (karader@vcu.edu) before September 15, 2011.
