As recent scholarship like Monica Miller’s of the black dandy has suggested, the history of dandyism is complicated by race, class, nationalism, and sexuality. This panel requests papers which challenge the boundaries of the dandy as ‘modern’ figure as well. As such things as race, class, etc. change our understanding of the figure/trope, has the dandy moved into the postmodern? How does postmodernism change representations and interpretations of dandyism?
Papers for this panel may analyze dandy figures from contemporary culture: literature, film, visual art, etc. Submit 250-500 word proposals to Kirsten Ortega at kortega@uccs.edu by September 30, 2011. Please include your name and affiliation, email address, and whether you will require any A/V technology. (Be aware that there is a $10 fee for A/V requirements.)
