The Benjamin L. Hooks Institute for Social Change at the University of Memphis seeks submissions for its annual conference in 2012, Toward a More Perfect Union: Civil Rights, Human Rights, and a New Age of Social Responsibility (working title). Conference planners are seeking to explore the civil rights activism of Benjamin L. Hooks by placing his life and work into historical context; examining the current state of civil rights activism and its relevancy to life in America today; and analyzing the role of the Civil Rights Movement in shaping and defining issues being tackled by international human rights movements.
The Hooks Institute conference on April 18-20, 2012 will be held at the University of Memphis. It will complement the public release of the Hooks Institute’s documentary on the life of Benjamin L. Hooks, scheduled for the evening of April 20, 2012 in downtown Memphis. The deadline for submission of the 200-250 word abstracts for 30-minute papers, along with a CV, is November 1, 2011.
