The issue of “improving alignment between secondary and post-secondary education,” “college readiness,” and “dual enrollment” is on the front burner of many Writing Department agendas. Many schools have been taking part in the initiative to provide secondary students with more appropriate preparation for college-level courses in math, reading, and writing. CUNY has “College Now” and various New Jersey community colleges have implemented the “College Bound” model; both models receive substantial state funding. For many high-profile leaders in education, the issue is simply about “reducing remediation.” Yet, college writing professors know the issue is not that simple, and some fundamental questions arise when they are asked to pursue a solution to the remediation problem:
• What is the role of higher education in preparing secondary students for college?
• How is a leadership role best accomplished?
• What are some of the models available for secondary and post-secondary dialogs to develop and flourish?
This is a call for presentations for a roundtable discussion at the Two Year College Association (Northeast Region) Annual Meeting in Portland, Maine, November 3-5, 2011, on the issue of “College Readiness.” Especially of interest are presentations that will facilitate discussion about the fundamental purpose and implications of such programs. College faculty who have been exploring various models, faculty who have been tasked with pursuing, or have been successful in pursuing dialog with secondary school faculty on this issue are invited to discuss and explore their experiences in a collegial setting.
