"Pilgrims, Pilgrimages” is an interdisciplinary symposium organized by the Milà i Fontanals Institute-CSIC to study Christian, Jewish, and Muslim pilgrimages within the context of cultural interactions in the Mediterranean. Drawing upon the complementary perspectives of distinguished medievalists, Hebraists, Islamic Studies scholars,
anthropologists, and historians of religion from Spain, Germany, and the United States, this symposium aims to explore the multifaceted and changing character of pilgrimages to sanctuaries such as St. James of Compostela, Mecca, and Jerusalem and the religious and profane
motivations of travel. It will also compare the modern concept of the “virtual” pilgrimage with pre-modern interior or spiritual journeys of mystics in order to uncover the roots of modern pilgrimage and to generate new proposals for theorizing the phenomenon.
The symposium will take place on July 14, 2011 in Barcelona at the Palau del Lloctinent of the Archive of the Crown of Aragon, located on calle Comtes, 2. Admission to the event is free, however we ask that those wishing to attend to register previously by sending an email message to the following address: simposi.pelegrins@imf.csic.es
