CFP - AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR THE HISTORY OF RHETORIC Affiliate Group, Eastern Communication Association Annual Convention, April 26-29, 2012
The American Society for the History of Rhetoric (ASHR) affiliate group of the Eastern Communication Association invites submissions of papers and panel proposals for the 103rd Annual Meeting of the Eastern Communication Association to be held in Cambridge, MA at the Royal Sonesta Hotel Boston.
ASHR invites papers, panels and program proposals focusing on the history of rhetoric from all historical periods. ASHR's goal is to "promote the study of both theory and practice of rhetoric in all periods and languages and its relationship with poetics, politics, religion, law, and other cultural influences." Student submissions are especially welcome.
ASHR encourages the submission of papers and panels which explore the 2012 ECA convention theme of "Transitions” as well as its related themes of alteration, change, movement, passages, and journeys. Applied to the history of rhetoric, this year's theme encourages scholarly exploration of historical, contemporary, and future “transitions” within our ASHR scholarship.
All submissions should be sent electronically via email to the ECA-ASHR planner, Maureen Minielli, at mminielli@kingsborough.edu. To receive consideration, completed submissions must be received by Friday, October 14, 2011.
I. COMPETITIVE PAPERS: Submitted, completed papers should include:
A. A detachable title page with the title of the paper and the author's affiliation, mailing address, telephone number, and email address, and if you are a member of ECA or a non-ECA member submitting to the convention.
B. The word "Debut" marked on all papers written by authors who have not presented previously at a regional or national convention
C. A one-page abstract on the second page
D. A statement of professional responsibility
E. If the paper is multi-authored, please indicate who will be presenting at the convention.
II. PROGRAM/PANEL PROPOSALS: Submitted, completed program and panel proposals should include:
A. A thematic title for the program
B. Names of the chairs and respondents [Note ECA is encouraging submitters to avoid scheduling participants in dual or tri-roles (chair/respondent, chair/participant or respondent/participant, or chair/participant/respondent) and is discouraging panel submissions composed primarily of participants from the same institution)].
C. Names, mailing addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, and institutional affiliations of all participants
D. Titles and abstracts for each paper or presentation
E. A program copy (NO MORE than a 75 word description) as it should appear in the final program
F. A detailed rationale for the program or panel
G. A statement of professional responsibility
III. STATEMENT OF PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY: Please include the following statement of professional responsibility on the second page, under the abstract: "In submitting the attached paper or proposal, I/We recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. I/We agree to present this panel or paper if it is accepted and programmed. I/We further recognize that all who attend and present at ECA's annual meeting must register and pay required fees."
IV. AUDIO-VISUAL REQUESTS: AV equipment rental at conventions is very expensive and ECA has a limited budget. Submitters are encouraged to structure their presentations in a way where equipment is not needed. If equipment is required, submitters are encouraged to provide their own. If alternatives cannot be determined and a request through ECA must be made, please describe the equipment request in the appropriate place on the program information page. AV equipment requests will be considered but will not be guaranteed.
V. ELECTRONIC SUBMISSION PROCESS: For email submission, please create separate files for the title page, paper/panel/program, and AV equipment requests. When attaching the files, please use a "key word descriptor" followed by a format word descriptor("PAPER," "PANEL" "PROGRAM" etc). For title pages and AV equipment requests, please include a third word descriptor - "TITLE" or "AV." For example, a paper examining Aristotle's conception of ethos would look like:
File 1: "Aristotle Ethos PAPER"
File 2: "Aristotle Ethos TITLE"
If you are using Microsoft Word 2007 or 2010, please save your files in Microsoft Word 1997-2003 format (.doc instead of .docx) to facilitate ease of reviewing by reviewers.
In the email subject header, please write "ECA ASHR Submission" so submissions are easily identifiable.
If you discover an error in your submission and must resubmit, please re-include all files with your submission. Resubmissions will not be accepted after the final submission deadline.
For questions or additional inquiries, contact Maureen Minielli at mminielli@kingsborough.edu. Additional information regarding the 2012 Convention is available at the ECA website at http://associationdatabase.com/aws/ECA/pt/sp/p_Home_Page
