This call seeks papers that address the role of the detective in tough times. How is the hard-boiled genre related to economic and cultural changes, i.e. a recession? How does the detective resist, abet, or challenge corporate fraud, insurance deals, and institutional exploitation? The panel seeks papers that consider such questions on crime and unemployment in fiction or film, i.e: James Cain, Raymond Chandler, or Hans Fallada. Panel chair: Jessica Datema
