A new web site Civilian Public Service tells the story of nearly 12,000 U.S. WWII conscientious objectors (COs) who chose “work of includes a searchable database of the COs who served in CPS as well as the communities, occupations and denominations from which they entered, and the camps and units to which they were assigned. Users may search the database of the COs’ names as well as a listing and description of the more than 150 camps and units where they served in a variety of settings including soil conservation, forest service, public health projects, state mental hospitals, as smoke jumpers and human guinea pigs. The site serves as a source for living CPS men and women, their descendants, others affiliated with CPS; historians, librarians, students and religious organizations; archivists with collections regarding CPS; peace educators and advocates; and young people engaged with issues of peace and war who want to learn more about conscientious objection.
