In the past three decades Latin America has seen an increased cultural and political presence of indigenous people as they redefine borders, group and individual identities, as well as political and cultural configurations. One salient feature of this indigenous presence in the region is a commitment to the production and dissemination of renewed knowledge systems that is facilitated by transnational networks and global imagined communities. This panel seeks to explore the ways in which indigenous writers and intellectuals in recent years set out to unhinge traditional modes of production of knowledge and propose new schemes, as informed by a contemporary indigenous experience. We are particularly interested in observing the emergence of a contemporary Indigenous literary and cultural presence in the region and its effects in official and unofficial cultures.
