This panel envisions a crossroads where transnational literatures, gender, and political power meet. We believe the elastic, mutable qualities of transnational literature—border crossing, hybridity, and the erosion of cultural barriers—uniquely situate it to confront patriarchy, tyranny, and gender imbalance.
In general, we are more interested in how literature and contemporary or historical world affairs influence and reflect one another than in theoretical discourse. For example, investigations into the role of literature and gender with regard to the 2011 Arab Spring, major world elections, state repression, or specific human rights violations are particularly welcome. Broader themes include, but are not limited to: patriarchy or tyranny in transnational literatures; gender and ultra-nationalism in fiction, poetry, journalism, or new media; gender and transnational protest; and the (gendered) confrontation between author and state.
