The Institute of Caribbean Studies of the University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras (UPR-RP), invites the academic community and the general public to the lecture “Nuevas rutas diaspóricas: la migración cubana en Canadá y Europa Occidental [New Diasporic Routes: Cuban Migration in Canada and Western Europe] by Dr. Jean Stubbs (Institute for the Study of the Americas, University of London, UK). Dr. Jorge Duany (Department of Sociology and Anthropology, School of Social Sciences, UPR-RP) will serve as commentator. The lecture will be held on Wednesday, May 25, from 1:00 to 3:00pm in Amphitheatre CRA 108 (Carmen Rivera de Alvarado Building), School of Social Sciences, Puerto Rico-Río Piedras
Description: Where is new Cuban diaspora, what are its characteristics, and how is it identifed? This presentation outlines the new diasporic routes linked to the flows of tourism, trade, investment, and culture –especially music and dance—that have historical roots in Canada and Western Europe. These have been maintained since 1959 and have flourished since 1989. This study outlines new diasporic profiles according to class, gender, generation, and race, with a notably greater representation of Afro- Cubans as well as more interracial relationships and family links between country of origin and country of destination. To conclude, new transculturations of Cuban identity are explored within the inclusionist and exclusionist forces in our current globalized world.
