The Food and Culture Panels of the Mid-Atlantic Popular and American Culture Association (MAPACA) invites papers and panels for their annual conference at The Radisson Warwick Hotel, Philadelphia, from November 3-5, 2011. Abstracts deadline is June 15, 2011. A myriad of factors shape our relationship with food. What we choose to eat, when we eat it, with whom we eat it, and how we eat it is influenced by technology, economics, politics, fashion, tradition, religion, and other aspects of culture. Scholars from all disciplines are invited to address the intersection of food and the human experience. Non-academic scholars and graduate students are encouraged to participate. Topics might include (but are not limited to) the politics of food, culinary tourism, gender and food preparation/consumption, food in literature, health and diet, food in advertising, and restaurant culture. Because of publication considerations, proposals connected to the mid-Atlantic region are especially encouraged.
Submit a 150-word abstract and brief bio directly to Dr. Jill Nussel, Food and Culture Area Chair at nusselj@ipfw.edu. Panels of 3 or 4 presenters, single papers, roundtables, or alternative formats are encouraged.
