The conference aims to explore the dialectic of minority identity in the specific case of religious minorities and their role in the Nation formation in 19th-century Europe. The purpose of this event is therefore to present a series of specific case studies, aimed at identifying more general patterns in the integration/exclusion processes of religious minorities in European national states.
What was the role of these minorities, if any, in the construction of the national identity? A role of opposition, a role of support, a complementary role or did they show a total lack of interest? Did they create a national narration? If so, was it alternative to the mainstream national discourse or complementary?
These questions will be answered by papers focusing on individual intellectuals, specific aspects of religious associations or institutions as well as other religion-related events who helped shape the relation between Nation and Religion. For the purposes of this conference all contributions will particularly but not exclusively focus on the cases of Jews, Protestants and Catholics in national or transnational perspective.
