Wendat and Wyandot Studies Conference
Wendake, June 13-16, 2012
Project Yawenda, the Huron-Wendat Nation and the Yawendowänenh Society are pleased to announce the first Wendat and Wyandot Studies Conference, in Wendake (Wendat Territory, Quebec, Canada), from June 13 to 16, 2012.
The theme of the congress will be: “Wendat and Wyandot Continuities”. The conference aims at bringing together researchers and practitioners, from both native communities and academia, who are interested in the Wendat and Wyandot(te) peoples from Quebec, Oklahoma, Kansas, Michigan, and elsewhere. Special focus will be given to expressions of these nations’ history, culture, language, society, as well as the assertion of their rights.
Presentations will attempt to illustrate how continuity has been maintained between the Wendat and Wyandot of today and their ancestors, without preventing the former from being fully integrated into the contemporary world.
Thematic sessions as well as individual communications might, for instance, deal with the fundamental rights pertaining to Wendat or Wyandot citizenship, sovereignty and territory, as well as with these nations’ knowledge, traditions, language, history, archeology, artistic and literary activities, contemporary territory, material culture, and the various types of services they offer their members (in terms of education, health, justice, economic development, etc.). Any proposal for a presentation on a Wendat-Wyandot theme, grounded in solid data, will be seriously considered by the congress’s scientific committee and by its organizers.
The conference will be held under the honorary presidency of the philosopher, historian and anthropologist Dr. Georges E. Sioui, the dean of Wendat intellectuals. It will also aim at honoring the memory of ethnologist Marius Barbeau, as we celebrate the centennial anniversary of his fieldwork in Wendake and Wyandotte, Oklahoma, during 2011-12.
Individuals or groups willing to organize a thematic session (composed of 3-6 papers) or to present an individual communication are asked to send by e-mail (at the address below) the title and a short abstract (10 lines maximum) of their proposal, including, of course, their name, e-mail address, scientific domain or field of interest, and professional or academic affiliation, and this before June 30, 2011. Participants in the conference are expected to pay for their own travel and subsistence expenses, but if at all possible, partial scholarships might be available to student presenters and those in need of financial assistance.
Instructions for participating in the conference (registration forms, information on accommodations, etc.) will be available at a later date through the website of the Interuniversity Center for Aboriginal Studies and Research (www.ciera.ulaval.ca). Registration fees should not exceed $100 CDN; there will be reduced rates for students and members of the Wendat and Wyandot(te) nations.

Le projet Yawenda, la Nation huronne-wendat et la société Yawendowänenh ont le plaisir d’annoncer la tenue du premier Congrès d’Études wendat et wyandot, qui se tiendra à Wendake (Territoire wendat, Québec, Canada), du 13 au 16 juin 2012.
Le congrès vise à rassembler les chercheurs et les intervenants communautaires et académiques qui s’intéressent aux Wendat et à leurs frères Wyandot d’Oklahoma, du Kansas, du Michigan et d’ailleurs, pour prendre connaissance de ce qui se fait et se dit au sujet de l’histoire, de la culture, de la langue, des pratiques sociales et de l’affirmation des droits de ces nations. Le thème choisi pour le congrès est : « Continuités wendat et wyandot ». Les présentations chercheront en effet à montrer comment les Wendat et les Wyandot d’aujourd’hui ont su maintenir la continuité avec leurs ancêtres, tout en étant pleinement intégrés au monde contemporain.
Les séances thématiques et les communications pourront ainsi porter sur les droits fondamentaux (en termes de citoyenneté, d’autonomie politique et de territoire) des nations wendat et wyandot, ainsi que sur les savoir-faire de ces nations, leurs traditions, leur langue, leur histoire et leur archéologie, leurs activités artistiques et littéraires, leur territoire d’aujourd’hui, leur culture matérielle et les services qu’elles offrent à leurs membres dans divers secteurs (éducation, santé, justice, développement économique, etc.). Toute proposition de présentation portant sur un thème wendat-wyandot et fondée sur des données solides sera examinée sérieusement par le comité scientifique et les organisateurs du congrès.
Le congrès sera sous la présidence d’honneur du philosophe, historien et anthropologue Georges E. Sioui, le doyen des intellectuels wendat. Il visera également à honorer la mémoire de l’ethnologue Marius Barbeau dont on célèbre en 2011-12 le centenaire des recherches de terrain à Wendake et à Wyandotte, Oklahoma.
Les personnes et organisations désireuses d’organiser une séance thématique (regroupant de 3 à 6 communications) ou de proposer une communication individuelle sont priées d’envoyer par courriel, à l’adresse ci-dessous, le titre et un court résumé (maximum de 10 lignes) de leur proposition, avec bien sûr leur nom et adresse courriel, leur domaine de recherche, d’études ou d’intervention, et leur affiliation professionnelle ou académique le cas échéant, et ce avant le 30 juin 2011. Les participants au congrès devront défrayer eux-mêmes le coût de leur voyage et de leur séjour, mais dans la mesure du possible, une aide financière partielle pourra être accordée aux présentateurs étudiants et aux personnes dans le besoin.
Les instructions pour participer au congrès (fiche d’inscription, information sur les hôtels, etc.) seront disponibles plus tard sur le site Web du Centre interuniversitaire d’études et de recherches autochtones (www.ciera.ulaval.ca). Les frais d’inscription ne devraient pas dépasser 100$CDN, avec un taux réduit pour les membres des nations wendat et wyandot, ainsi que pour les étudiants.
