Immigrants frequently recreate a sense of home through the associations they join and form: a home away from home. This colloquium brings together a number of scholars who are interested in immigrant associational culture in different ethnic groups and through a variety of disciplinary lenses. The meeting aims to provoke a dialogue on various issues: What are the roles of associations in immigrant communities? What leads to the growth and decline of immigrant associations over time? What is the correlation between the size of the immigrant community and the dynamism of the associational topography? Does an associational culture play a significant role in patterns of acculturation and assimilation? What benefits does an interdisciplinary and/or comparative approach bring to the study of immigrant associations? How and when to immigrant associations simply become ethnic associations? Join us as we attempt to formulate answers to these and other questions, as we celebrate New York University’s presentation of the exhibit The Fifth Province: County Associations in Irish America.
