The Institute of Caribbean Studies, Univ of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras, invites the academic community and the general public to the lecture “Los que tumbaron a Trujillo: combatientes puertorriqueños asesinados en las expediciones de 1959” [The Ones Who Toppled Trujillo: Puerto Rican Combatants Killed in the 1959 Expeditions] by Dr. Félix Ojeda Reyes (Institute of Caribbean Studies, UPR–Río Piedras). Dr. Emilio Cordero Michel (Meritorious Professor, School of History and Anthropology, Autonomous University of Santo Domingo) will comment the lecture (via Skype). The lecture will be held on Thursday, May 5, from 1:00 to 3:00pm in Amphitheatre CRA 108 (Carmen Rivera de Alvarado Building), School of Social Sciences, Puerto Rico-Río Piedras. Description: All of the Puerto Rican combatants who participated in the expeditions of June 14 and 20, 1959, against the dictatorship of Rafael Leónidas Trujillo in the Dominican Republic, were from the Puerto Rican diaspora. All were brutally murdered. No one in our country knows their names; no one knows when nor how they fell. They had trained militarily in the mountainous areas of Pinar del Río, Cuba, along with fighters of different nationalities. With the sacrifice of those warriors on the fronts of Constanza, Maimón, and Estero Hondo, the end of the dictatorship began. “The Ones Who Toppled Trujillo” is research in progress. To assemble the puzzle, Dr. Félix Ojeda Reyes interviewed survivors of the epic moment in Santo Domingo, and collected valuable testimony of commanders Delio Gómez Ochoa of Cuba, and Douglas Bravo of Venezuela. The research also gathers interesting testimonies of relatives and friends of the fallen. Using the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Ojeda has had access to documents of the Department of State, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Central Intelligence Agency, all necessary documents in order to assess the heroic epic.
