Evolution, Revolution or Devolution?
Reflections on the Italian Right, 1861-2011
First Postgraduate Colloquium in Italian Studies
University of Durham
4 – 5 November 2011
Postgraduate students and early career scholars are invited to submit proposals for the First Postgraduate Colloquium in Italian Studies at the University of Durham.
The 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy, occurring in 2011, has rekindled controversies and debates about its actual merit. In parliament, the Lega Nord is fighting to pass a federalist reform of the state which has been criticised as a first step toward the dismemberment of the country. Among the citizens, at least judging from the opinion polls, the anniversary is going largely unnoticed. In the cultural sphere, the revisionist approach of the so-called “right-wing culture” has struck a blow to the traditional view of Italian history. This cultural area has gained prominence during the last years – thanks to the crucial presence of Silvio Berlusconi – and it has contributed to shape cultural discussions and political agendas. The “right-wing” culture is, however, still an eclectic group, formed by journalists, intellectuals and academics of different background (from former communists to libertarians): despite the fuzzy identity, it has invested itself with the ultimate mission of providing cultural roots to a “liberal revolution”, after the failure of left wing governments. It thus seems especially appropriate to encourage investigation of the Italian past through a critical analysis of the the themes the “culture of the right” has put forward. Among them:
- the myth and the need of a “liberal revolution”;
- the idea of liberalism;
- the revision of Italian history;
- national identity;
- the right and the Catholic Church;
- the right in Italian society;
- right-wing and conservative tradition in post-1861 Italy;
- right-wing in elite culture and popular culture.
We are pleased to announce that Professor Ernesto Galli della Loggia (SUM – Istituto Italiano di Scienze Umane, Florence) will attend the conference and that he will deliver a guest lecture on the tradition of the right in Italy.
The conference organizers welcome interdisciplinary papers, comparative works and different methodologies.
The deadline for the proposals is 26 June 2011. Papers will be allotted 20 minutes for presentation, followed by 10 minutes for discussion. Abstracts of a maximum of 300 words, together with a CV, should be sent to:
Federico Casari (federico.casari@durham.ac.uk)
