The Thought & Action Review Panel invites submissions for “Defining our Values, Affirming our Ideas,” a Special Focus section in the 2011 edition of Thought & Action, the higher education Journal of the National Education Association.
We know that partisan winds are sweeping through the halls of state legislatures, where increasingly strident voices want to know, “What are we paying for? Can’t it be done by a computer, with less money, in a bigger class, for more elite students, by somebody else?”
But we would not leave it to them to answer.
With this theme, we invite authors to reflect on their own roles and institutions, and to help us define the value of this work that we’re all engaged in. Consider this: What does it mean to open your doors to all who strive to learn more? Importantly, what are students learning – from you? Why tenure? Why not for-profit? What does a professor, in front of a classroom, have to offer than an online educator can’t? Is there a point to academic freedom? Why join your union? How do you measure your success?
Thought & Action, with a readership of more than 150,000, seeks to provide readers with theoretical and practical information on issues in higher education that are important to higher education faculty and staff members of the National Education Association.
We welcome work from new scholars as well as seasoned ones; we prefer short to long; and we encourage a “reader-friendly” or conversational tone. More guidelines are available at www.nea.org/thoughtandaction. Please send submissions to the address below by June 1, 2011.
