We are seeking a discussant for a panel entitled "Formation of 'the public' in Turkey" at the 6th International Cultural Studies Conference that will be held at Kadir Has University in Istanbul,Turkey on September 8-10, 2011.
Based on field research on disaster preparedness, the urban poor, and pious women’s NGO activities, the panel examines following questions: How do the everyday practice and vernacular logic of publicness intersect? How would the boundary between private interests and public concerns be negotiated? Would there be pressure to close the discursive space and what would make resistance against it possible? And, finally, what would change the hegemonic structure of the public in Turkey?
The panel has already been accepted. If you are interested in the panel, please contact Kaoru Murakami at murakami@ide.go.jp.
