Current Positions Available at the Graduate School Practices of Literature at the Westfälische Wilhelms-University in Münster
The College of Philology at the Westfälische Wilhelms-University in Münster is looking for interested and qualified doctoral candidates in the area of Literary Studies starting October 1, 2011. In the Graduate School, “Practices of Literature,” you will have the opportunity to complete your doctorate degree within three years and to prepare yourself for an academic career in university or non-university professions.
Participating areas of study: English/American Studies, Arabic/Islamic Studies, Baltic Studies, Book Studies, German Studies, Comparative Studies, Latin Philology/Studies, Dutch Studies, Scandinavian Studies, Romance Studies, Sinology, Slavonic Studies.
The following three areas are to be emphasized in the individual doctoral dissertations:
1. Literature and Society
(The relationship between Literary Studies, Social Theories, Cultural Theories and Studies, and Literature)
2. Theories of Literature
(Philosophy of Science, History and Theory of Literature, Literary Theories)
3. Putting the Study of Literature into Practice
(Occupationally-oriented areas that apply Literary Studies, the literary marketplace, key qualifications, the relationship between Literary Theory and professional practice)
Curriculum: Lectures/series of talks, colloquia, group projects, workshops, practical training, academic teaching.
Mentoring: Each doctoral candidate will have an individual, interdisciplinary support group consisting of three members. A written agreement regarding the mentoring will be made and an individual work- and time schedule will be established. The respective professors will assist in applying for scholarships.
Application: The deadline to apply for the winter semester 2011 is May 31, 2011.
Qualifications: Masters degree with a grade of 2.0 (on a scale from 1.0 to 5.0 with 1.0 being the highest); some exceptions may be made for those with a Bachelors degree with a grade of 1.0. The selection process will take place in the following 3 stages:
1. Until May 31, 2011: Send us a brief application, preferably in electronic form, with your curriculum vitae in tabular form, a two-page rough draft of the intended dissertation, and your reason for applying to the GSPoL.
2. Until June 30, 2011: Upon our request, send us a detailed application with a 10-page synopsis of your intended dissertation, two written references from university professors or lecturers (three for those with Bachelors degrees).
3. July/August 2011: Personal interview.
