“Historia, Protestantismo e Identidad en el Continente Americano”
6, 7 y 8 de octubre 2011

El proyecto Disidencia y resistencia en el pluralismo cultural: Memoria y subjetividad en minorías sociales de la FES Iztacala de la UNAM, el proyecto Protestantismo, Geopolítica e Inquisición en la Hispanoamérica Colonial del Instituto de Investigaciones Históricas de la UMSNH, la Fraternidad Teológica Latinoamericana, IAPCHE (Institute for the Promotion of Christian Higher Education) y la Asociación Conference on Faith and History (organismo afiliado a la American Historical Association).
Invitan a investigadores, académicos e interesados en la historia del protestantismo en el Continente Americano a presentar propuestas de mesas temáticas o de ponencias individuales enmarcadas en alguno de los siguientes ejes:
• Historia del protestantismo
• Protestantismo e Inquisición en la América Colonial
• Religión e identidad en América Latina
• El protestantismo y la enseñanza de la historia
• Protestantismo y educación
• Consideraciones metodológicas en el estudio del protestantismo
• Catolicismo, protestantismo y cambio social
• Protestantismo y cultura anglosajona
• Cambios y procesos históricos del protestantismo en diferentes contextos americanos
• Protestantismo, salud y sociedad
• Imaginarios religiosos y vida cotidiana
• Cuestiones críticas en la enseñanza de temas interamericanos
Se aceptarán propuestas de otros ejes temáticos relacionados con el tema central de la Conferencia.
Se deberán enviar las propuestas de ponencias y mesas temáticas a más tardar el 31 de mayo de 2011 incluyendo la siguiente información:
a) Nombre del autor e institución de adscripción
b) Correo electrónico
c) Título de la ponencia
d) Resumen de la ponencia (máximo una cuartilla)
e) Mesa Temática donde sugiere sea considerada la participación.

Se recibirán propuestas y ponencias en español e inglés. Las propuestas serán revisadas por un Comité Académico de Selección que notificará a cada autor si fue o no aceptada.
Para ser incluidas in extenso en las memorias del evento en formato digital, las ponencias aceptadas deberán ser enviadas por correo electrónico a más tardar el 15 de agosto.
No habrá límite en la extensión de las ponencias que se recibirán en formato digital, pero cada autor deberá tomar en cuenta que sólo dispondrá de 20 minutos para hacer su presentación en una mesa. Las ponencias deberán ser enviadas en letra Times New Roman de 12 puntos a doble espacio. Los participantes deberán avisar al comité organizador en caso de necesitar un proyector digital para su presentación.

We invite those interested in the history of Protestantism in the American contintents to propose full panels or individual papers that relate to the colloquium theme by March 31, 2011. (We may be able to accept other topics; our goal is to include participants with a variety of interests, including CFH members who are not Latin Americanists. In some cases, we will organize panels that include North American and Latin American members.)
Panel topics might include, but are not limited to, the following:
History of Protestantism
Religion and Identities in the Americas
Protestantism and the teaching of History
Protestantism and Education
Methodological Considerations in the study of Protestantism
Protestants in Social, Political and University Student Movements
The Americanization (broadly defined) of Protestantism
Critical Issues in the Teaching of Inter-American or Pan-American themes
Other features of the program will include:
- Group tours that will enrich your understanding of Mexico and your teaching of history [possibilities include Teotihuacán, el Zócalo and el Palacio Nacional (Diego Rivera murals), Museum of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH)]
- Vocation track: Lectures and discussions exploring our roles as Christian academics, designed particularly to encourage and challenge the younger Latin American students in attendance
- Pedagogy track: Round table discussions on teaching critical issues in pan-American issues like colonial empires, Mexican-American War, the Mexican Revolution, immigration, etc.
We invite proposals for individual papers or entire panels – including on other topics related to the central conference theme – and we particularly encourage thematic panels that bring together scholars from North and Latin America. (Note: The committee will also work to match up individual papers in order to create such inter-American panels where practical.)
To submit a paper (or entire panel) in English, email Ron Morgan at rxm03c@acu.edu by May 31, 2011, if at all possible. Please include the following information:
a) Author name(s) and institution(s) of affiliation
b) Email address(es)
c) Paper title (or panel title with individivual paper titles)
d) 200-300 word abstract of each paper
The committee is receiving proposals in English, Spanish or Portuguese. The selection committee will review all proposals and inform each author about acceptance or non-acceptance. We are requesting that each paper (full text) be emailed to the committee by August 15, 2011, so that it can be included in the digitalized “Conference Memorial” that will be provided to each participant in October. Please send your paper with the following formatting: Times New Roman 12, double spaced.
While individual presentation time will be limited to 20 minutes, it is permissible to send a full-text paper that exceeds that limit. We simply request that you make your oral presentation from an edited version which keep the presentation to within 20 minutes.
Each participant should inform the organizing committee if she or he will require the use of a digital projector for the presentation.
