For the Record: Representations of the Past in Film and Video Production
This session examines contemporary film and video production as a means to address historical narratives and engage with misrepresented histories. Our starting point for these discussions is the work of Canadian artist Sylvia Hamilton, who recently created The Little Black School House (2007), a documentary about the segregation of Black Canadians in provincial school systems in Ontario and Nova Scotia. Hamilton explains that employing the medium of film was crucial to the project of revealing these stories, which have been and continue to be omitted from the Canadian dominant historical narrative. Not limiting this discussion to Canadian case studies, we invite papers that interrogate how film and video (in traditional as well as experimental forms) have been employed to engage with the past, as well as papers that examine the larger issues of authorship, representation and aesthetics surrounding such practices.
