Call For Papers:
Changing the World One Frame at a Time
2011 Midwest Popular Culture Association Conference
Friday-Sunday, October 14-16, 2011
Milwaukee, WI
Hilton Milwaukee City Center
http://www.mpcaaca.org
Deadline: April 30, 2011
In this age of social media, you tube and twitter, what is the place for the social issue documentary film? The rapid spread of media has certainly changed the terms of dissemination and distribution of media. It has also changed the style and content in some cases making social commentary in little more than cynical sound bites. Are these changes the evolution of the long history of social issue documentaries or are they a new form of media entirely.
This panel will explore the various alternative styles that have been recently grown from the change in dissemination. I invite papers that explore the use of you tube and social media video as well as twitter with the explicit goal of generating collective social change.
Please send 250 word abstract proposals to Laura Vazquez, Northern Illinois University: Lvazquez@niu.edu
