presented by Dr. David Martin
May 25, 2011; 7 - 8:30 pm
Monmouth County Library, Eastern Branch
1001 Hwy 35 (Broad St)Shrewsbury, NJ 07702

Dr. Martin will discuss the “traditional” turning point of the Civil War, the great Union victories at Gettysburg and Vicksburg in July 1863, and the reasons why these battles have long been viewed as so critical. He will then look at the war from other angles in order to explore the economic, political and psychological turning points of the war. He will also explore if the actual military turning point of the war may actually have been in 1862 or even as late as 1864. His presentation will include discussion of such varying topics as economic output, inflation, population centers, the draft, and the elections of 1862 and 1864.
