‘Deviance and Orthodoxy’,
to be held at Swansea University
23-24 June 2011
Historical discourse is often dominated by attempts to preserve orthodoxy, be it cultural, societal, or political. However, history is also marked by the emergence of deviant parties who seek to challenge or overthrow the ‘norms’ of the environments they inhabit. This Symposium seeks to explore these themes, with a broad focus on the ways in which deviance and orthodoxy are portrayed in written and visual sources drawn from a range of periods, subjects and places. The Symposium will include delegate papers, a keynote lecture, a symposium dinner, and the option of a trip to a local site of historical interest on 24 June 2011.
Potential topics might include, but are not limited to:
• Changing conceptions of ‘deviance’ and ‘orthodoxy’ throughout history
• Individuals who, or events which, challenged social or cultural ‘orthodoxy’ in context
• Methods in which the preservation of cultural ‘orthodoxy’ was attempted
• Literary discourses surrounding cultural deviance and/or orthodoxy
• The ideology and writings of deviant bodies or individuals
• Contemporary and ‘historical’ reactions to deviance and orthodoxy
• The successes and failures of deviant or orthodox movements
The programme organisers welcome proposals for 20-minute papers from scholars of History and related disciplines at any stage of their research. Please send a 200-250 word abstract to deviance.orthodoxy.2011@gmail.com in order to be considered for a paper of 20 minutes. Please include your name, level of study, institution and research area.
Proposals should be sent to arrive no later than FRIDAY 26 April 2011 at 12 noon. Proposals received after this date will not be considered for inclusion except in special circumstances. Accommodation will not be provided by the organisers, but details of local hotels will be supplied upon registration. Delegates are welcome to attend even if they are not intending to give a paper; Registration Details will be supplied upon request
