Teachers, curators, historians, scholars, librarians, students, and the general public are invited to enjoy a two-day conference, Staten Island in American History and 21st Century Education at the College of Staten Island (CUNY), with more than 80 presentations,includng panels on various themes from Dutch colonial architecture to contemporary politics, from war memorials to the history of local parks, including the 10th anniversary of the closing of Fresh Kills. Other special panels include transportation history, archaeology, pedagogy, immigration, Catholic and Jewish history, the American Revolution, the civil rights movement, and LGBTQ history.
The Conference is scheduled for March 19-20, 2011 at the College of Staten Island (CUNY)and is part of the year-long celebration of the 350th anniversary of the first permanent European settlement on Staten Island, New York.
Our two keynote speakers will be Ms. Carmen Farina, former Deputy Chancellor of NYC Public Schools (Saturday March 19) and the preeminent historian of New York City Dr. Kenneth T. Jackson of Columbia University (Sunday March 20).
