ANTIQUITY AS FUTURE? -
The Colloquium “Mersin in History" IV - 20-22 October 2011, Mersin, TURKEY
The Center for Mediterranean Urban Studies at Mersin University organizes the Colloquium “Mersin in History" every three years. The series of colloquia prepare a ground for the development of new and original studies of Mersin and its’ region, create opportunities of local knowledge, culture and sharing of documents, provide sharing and keeping records of near history of Mersin and culture of life that told by local personalities and oral information/intangible heritage is nowhere to be registered.
Today, there is a growing interest in exploring the diversity to which Mediterranean cities have been host to over the centuries. This common heritage of diversity distinguishes Mediterranean cities as well as providing them with a solid basis for strengthening their ties in order to build a better common future. In the fourth of the colloquium entitled “Mersin in History”, 20-22 October 2011, Mersin in a venue where antiquity coexists with the contemporary in its utmost complexity that defies characterization as simply modern, we thus choose as our theme and subtitle “Antiquity as Future?” in order to take a further step in this direction.
The main themes for the colloquium are:
• Archaeology and the Mediterranean World
• Human Material at Work: Communities and Merchant Families in Daily Life
• Networks and Routes of Faith and/or Commerce
• Architectural Diversity and the Built Environment of the Future (invited speakers only)
We invite submissions from fields as disparate as, but not restricted to, archaeology, architecture, history, social sciences and urban studies so long as they pertain to the above specified themes. The deadline for abstract submissions of maximum 350 words is April 15, 2011. Full papers are expected by August 31, 2011. We expect to publish a post-conference final publication.
