The Centre for Cultural Policy and Management at City University London is hosting Dr Frank Schipper for the lecture 'Themes in Technology and Culture: Infrastructure and Literature in late 19th-early 20th Century Europe'
Frank Schipper is a historian at Eindhoven University of Technology and Leiden University, The Netherlands. His research considers the long-term development of infrastructures as a lens on European integration. In this lecture, he discusses the role of infrastructure in literature and focuses specifically on the role of communication and transport technologies in the late 19th-early 20th century novel. Building on the work of scholars whose research deals explicitly with connections of Europe-and-infrastructure, Dr Schipper engages with infrastructures as metaphors and offers a pathway into discussing broader issues involved in studying links between technology, culture and identity.
