We are happy to accept articles for the peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary yearbook Jahrbuch immersiver Medien/Yearbook of Immersive Media. The 2011 issue is entitled 'Immersion: Classifications, Definitions and Explorations'.
The yearbook is published in German and English. Each issue is devoted to special topics dealing with aspects of immersive media. It is published by the Department of Media and the Centre for Culture and Science Communication at the University of Applied Sciences Kiel, Germany. Immersive media are understood broadly as media which posess immersive potential in that they can bridge the gap between media user and medium. This generally implies that the recipient's body or psyche are captured or infected by narrative or interactive aspects of media in a way that he or she imagines to become part of mediated spaces or interactive situations. Immersive media, thereby, foster the physical, sensual and/or psychological submersion of media recipients and mediated content (as can, for instance, be observed in stereoscopic films, virtual reality environments and video games).
The yearbook is a peer-reviewed interdisciplinary publication aimed at an international academic readership. Its focus lies upon multimedia or audiovisual media (360-degree projections, visual culture, film, video games, etc.).
An indicative list of suitable topics for articles may include:
- technology and theory of immersive media
- towards a definition of immersion
- perception and aesthetics of immersive media
- characteristics of immersive media in contrast to similar phenomena
- narrative concepts for immersive media
- psychological preconditions of immersion
- historical developments of immersive media
- application of immersive media
Submitted articles must be original contributions that engage with recent studies dealing with immersive theory and practice. Contributions should be 5000 to 8000 words in length. Please send an abtract, brief biographical information and contact details and your article to immersive-medien@fh-kiel.de. A style sheet can be obtained through our website at www.immersive-medien.de.
