Call for Papers: MYTHOLOGY and POPULAR CULTURE
2011 Midwest Popular Culture Association
Friday – Sunday, October 14-16, 2011
Hilton Milwaukee City Center
Milwaukee, WI
http://www.mpcaaca.org
Deadline: April 30, 2011
Description: The Mythology section of the Midwest Popular Culture Association invites submissions on the many intersections of sacred story and modern culture for presentation at the MPCA/ACA meeting in Milwaukee. Myth, here understood as sacred narrative of many types (divinity, creation, flood, etiological, hero, etc.), spans a variety of religious traditions (Jewish, Christian, Hindu, Egyptian, Indigenous American, etc.). The motifs, characters and imagery of myth continue to resonate in the modern world, and are reinterpreted in many forms of popular media. The papers proposed for this panel may explore any aspect of this relationship between ancient story and modern retelling. Topics may include, but are not limited to: creation myths retold on scifi/fantasy TV; re-visions of gods and goddesses in graphic novels / manga; mythological characters or plots in popular gaming; contemporary screen portrayals of classical heroes; appearance and role of mythological figures in Young Adult Fiction.
We encourage both individual paper and full panel proposals for the conference. Please send 250 word abstracts, with paper title(s), to Jessica Tinklenberg deVega at Morningside College (devega@morningside.edu). Proposals should include the presenter’s name, affiliation, and email.
Graduate student travel grants are available. See http://mpcaaca.org/about/grants.html
